CINJ Adds iPads and NOOKs as Educational and Entertainment Tools in its Resource and Learning Center Newswise — New Brunswick, N.J., March 1, 2011 –To better serve patients and the greater community, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s (CINJ) Resource and Learning Center (RLC) is incorporating the Apple iPad and Barnes & Noble NOOK (TM) electronic reader into its information arsenal. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The RLC provides information on a variety of cancer topics, such as clinical trials; prevention; diagnosis and treatment; research; and nutrition through varied media, such as books, magazines, DVDs and CD ROMs. Now this information can also be accessed in a more portable manner, with the addition of the iPads and NOOKs
The iPads are loaded with books, music, and videos to provide reliable, relevant and current information about all aspects of cancer as well as for entertainment. Users also will have access to games and the Internet for while they obtain their treatment.
“The addition of the iPads to our resources will allow me to better serve our patients by helping them to search for information that suits their personal needs. They can then read about it, watch it, or listen to it while taking notes and even send this information to their personal e-mail all from one easy-to-use centralized multi-media tool,” said CINJ’s medical librarian Janet Lasin, MLS, BS. “These devices especially enhance services for those who are less mobile by allowing for the library to come to them should they be unable to come to the Resource and Learning Center.”
The NOOKs contain books and magazines providing a quick divergence in the waiting room or hours of entertainment during treatment. Many of the uploaded books are also available in hard copy in the RLC, allowing patients to check them out and take them home if they get hooked while reading it on the NOOK.
“It’s exciting to see these devices be so well received by patients of all ages,” she added. “And now when nurses send patients up to the RLC with a ‘prescription for learning,’ instead of having the name of a book or an article on the script, sometimes the slip will simply say, ‘iPad’.”
The devices were purchased with support from Johnson & Johnson and the Karma Foundation.
The RLC, which welcomes both patients and members of the general public, is located on the second floor at CINJ and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional information can be found at: www.cinj.org/rlc.
