Newswise — An exclusive survey of IEEE Fellows forecasts which technologies are most likely to impact our lives in the next 20 years. IEEE Spectrum's Editor Susan Hassler teamed up with The Institute for the Future to generate a forecast that they think is very believable because of the research techniques they used and because of the pragmatic approach of the elite IEEE Fellows to this survey. For example, the IEEE Fellows predict that in the next 20 years massively parallel computing networks and ubiquitous terabit fiber networks will provide computing power and communications bandwidth to burn--but they don't expect quantum computing or nanotechnology to have a significant commercial impact in that same timeframe.

This survey of the IEEE Fellows is the most sophisticated since IEEE Spectrum started surveying them in 2003.
