Cancer Specialist Dr. John P. Curtin Joins Faculty of NYU School of Medicine

-Will head program for comprehensive care of women with cancer-

New York, NY, September 23, 1999 -- John P. Curtin, M.D., a nationally recognized cancer surgeon and researcher, has joined NYU School of Medicine as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. He joins NYU from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Cornell University Medical College in New York City.

Dr. Curtin specializes in gynecologic oncology, a subspecialty of oncology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs. Dr. Curtin's practice has been devoted to women with cancer of the uterus, cervix and ovaries and his research is especially concerned with improving the diagnosis and treatment of these cancers.

"Dr. Curtin is an extraordinarily skilled surgeon, clinician and educator with an outstanding national reputation as a gynecologic oncologist, and he will play an important role in our new program focusing on the comprehensive care of women with cancer," said Charles Lockwood, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU and Interim Director of the Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Comprehensive Cancer Center at NYU Medical Center.

Dr. Curtin's appointment reflects NYU's commitment to women's health, according to Dr. Lockwood. "His expertise as a clinician and researcher will complement the ongoing work of researchers who are already studying the genetic and biological basis for cancers affecting the reproductive organs and breast in women," said Dr. Lockwood.

Dr. Curtin received an M.D. degree from Creighton University in Omaha and last year a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Business. Prior to his appointments at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Cornell, Dr. Curtin was affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis and the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles.

In addition to his academic appointment at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Curtin will be Director of Strategic Planning for the Women's Cancer Program at the Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Comprehensive Cancer Center.
