Dr. Terry Nicola, director of sports medicine rehabilitation at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, says he has been the official medical director of more Chicagoland runs, races and marathons than any other physician in the last several decades. He has run the Chicago Marathon five times himself, with a best time of 2:35 in 1985, when he came in 106th place, placing him in the elite runners’ category.

Nicola will be stationed at the mile 25 elite runners’ tent during the Oct. 13 Chicago Marathon to treat and evaluate injured runners.

Although the forecast for this year’s Chicago Marathon indicates temps in the 60s, Nicola says that even on cool days runners can experience heat stroke and need to stay hydrated. He says before the gun goes off, "you better make sure your training over the last few months went well otherwise the marathon poses a very significant risk for serious injury."

Nicola helps train and treat UIC Flames student athletes, as well as Chicago’s runners, both at the super-elite level and beginners. His special interests include the nutritional needs of athletes and treating runners with stress fractures.
