Circulation will published weekly beginning in January, 1998

DALLAS (July 1, 1997) - Circulation, the American Heart Association journal will be published weekly beginning in January 1998 under a new name Circulation - Journal of the American Heart Association.

Circulation will join the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Journal of the American Medical Association, Nature and The Lancet, among others, as peer-reviewed scientific journals published on a weekly basis.

"Cardiovascular medicine deserves a weekly publication, and Circulation is it," says Circulation editor James T. Willerson, M.D., medical director, chief of cardiology and director of cardiology research at the Texas Heart Institute/St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. "The medical community and the public depend on Circulation for information about heart disease and stroke. By publishing weekly, we can get that information to our colleagues quicker." Willerson, who is chairman of internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical School and Hermann Hospital, says that Circulation would continue to emphasize major developments in clinical and basic research that will provide new insight into cardiovascular disease, the nation's No. 1 killer. Circulation, which has been published by the American Heart Association since 1952, is currently published every other week. It was a monthly publication until January 1995 when the distribution was changed to twice a month. In 1998 Circulation will be published once a week, except for the last week of December and the first week of January 1999. Circulation will also have a new look in its cover illustration and overall layout.

"The changes in the appearance and frequency of Circulation should even further boost its stature in the medical community," said Larry Joyce, vice president of the American Heart Association's cardiovascular and stroke information group. "We will continue to present the most important cardiovascular information in an easier-to-read format."

The American Heart Association publishes five scientific journals: Circulation, Circulation Research, Stroke, Hypertension, and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. The latter three will continue to be published monthly and Circulation Research will be published twice a month beginning in January 1998. ###
