Newswise — Deadlines have been extended for two American Institute of Physics Science Writing Awards: those for journalist-written books and for broadcast media pieces in physics, astronomy and related fields.

The purpose of these awards is to promote effective science communication in print and broadcast media in order to improve the general public's appreciation of physics, astronomy, and allied science fields. The winning author will receive $3,000, an engraved Windsor chair, and a certificate of recognition. Deadlines are being extended in two categories: Journalist-Written Books and Broadcast Pieces shorter than 15 minutes.

JOURNALIST-WRITTEN BOOKS: The 2006 prize will go to a book by a professional journalist or feature writer and published between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005. The extended deadline for this prize is June 1, 2006.

BROADCAST PIECES (Shorter than 15 Minutes): For the 2006 prize, entries must be a scripted radio or television program that is shorter than 15 minutes and aired between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005. All entries must be submitted as nine copies of tapes/CDs or 1⁄2 " VHS cassettes, along with nine copies of the typed script. The extended deadline for this prize is June 1, 2006.

STEP ONE: Go online to fill out a complete entry form - indicating the title of the piece, and the name and date of publication - at http://www.aip.org/aip/writing/entryform.html.

FOR JOURNALIST CATEGORY: Mail nine original copies of the book to the address below.FOR BROADCAST CATEGORY: Mail nine CDs, DVDs, or VHS copies of each entry to the address below.

ADDITIONAL NOTES--Collaborative efforts of multiple authors will be considered as a single entry. --A series may be submitted as a single entry if each section clearly states that it is part of a series. One or two individual sections of a series may also be submitted as separate entries.--As many as three entries, written by a single author or group of authors, may be submitted. If more than three entries are submitted by an author, or on the author's behalf, only the first three will be eligible. Entries submitted by the author will be given preference.
