Newswise — Loyola University Health System neurologist Dr. José Biller has been appointed editor-in-chief of Frontiers in Neurology, a new peer-reviewed journal that is launching in December.

The journal said Biller is a "bold innovator" and a leading expert in the field of neurology, with special expertise in stroke and vascular neurology. Biller is chairman of the Department of Neurology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

"These are exciting times in the clinical neurosciences, and meaningful advances in research and clinical care have been made in neurology and related disciplines," Biller said. "The field is vast, complex, increasingly interdisciplinary, rapidly expanding and intellectually challenging."

Frontiers in Neurology is among a group of open-access journals supported by the Frontiers Research Foundation, an international not-for-profit foundation based in Switzerland.

Biller also is editor of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases and is a member of the editorial boards of 11 other journals and publications, including Stroke, CNS Drugs and Cerebrovascular Diseases. Biller is the author of more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and 110 book chapters. He has edited 14 books and given more than 440 invited lectures and presentations domestically and internationally.

Biller is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, American College of Physicians and Stroke Council of the American Heart Association. He is an active member of the American Neurological Association.

In addition to stroke and vascular neurology, Biller's special interests include acute neurology care, aneurysms, brain hemorrhage, general neurology, neurological complications of pregnancy, stroke in children and young adults and transient ischemic attacks.
