UAB psychologist Josh Klapow, Ph.D., says that getting residents to safety from Fort McMurray doesn't mean that everything is now temporarily “ok”. "We know that as the re-entry process begins the trauma starts all over again. Seeing the damage, recovering deceased pets, wondering why some homes were saved and others weren’t, having to start all over again, not being able to ever move back— these are very significant psycho-social stressors that can change people forever. We think about evacuations as the toughest part- they may be logistically but these other issues can damage a person psychologically for life."
