Newswise — The recent eruption of the Pacaya volcano in Guatemala has resulted in loss of life and wreaked havoc in many communities. At least one person has died, and three are missing.

Rudiger Escobar Wolf, a PhD candidate at Michigan Technological University, was employed at the Guatemalan volcanic disaster agency prior to coming to Michigan Tech. He has had five years of experience in Guatemala and is doing his dissertation on Fuego, a nearby volcano.

Wolf is willing to talk about risk assessment and response to the crisis. He is also working to contact other Michigan Tech students in Michigan Tech's Peace Corps Master's International program who are serving as volunteers at the scene.

Michigan Tech has a long history of research with hazard mitigation, including volcanoes in Guatemala.

Escobar is available via email and by telephone tonight, Friday, May 28, until 8 p.m. Eastern time, and tomorrow, Saturday, from 9 a.m. through most of the day.
