NYU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE EXPERT CAN COMMENT ON NEW FDA-APPPROVED WEIGHT LOSS TREATMENT
Dr. Christine Ren, an expert in bariatric medicine at NYU Medical Center, is available to comment on the recent FDA approval of the Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Banding System for the treatment of morbid obesity.
Dr. Ren is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at New York University School of Medicine. She is a board certified general surgeon and a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).
Dr. Ren has also organized the NYU Program for Surgical Weight Loss. Her specialty is laparoscopic surgery and she has trained surgeons in minimally invasive bariatric surgery using laparoscopic techniques.
Laparoscopic surgery, or keyhole surgery, is a technique performed through very small cuts in the skin rather than the standard large incision. This minimally invasive technique has proved to have a substantial advantage to overweight patients as it decreases post-surgical pain and prevents risk of many potential complications.
