Newswise — White House and U.S. Department of Education representatives will join addiction researchers and recovery program administrators as Texas Tech University hosts the nation’s first conference to promote the establishment of recovery communities on college campuses.

Recovery and Relapse Prevention: Best Practices for Combating Addiction and Supporting Recovery takes place April 15-17 in the Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery in the College of Human Sciences Building at 15th Street and Akron Avenue in Lubbock, Texas.

Sessions will focus on sharing new recovery research findings as well as providing tips and information for starting and sustaining recovery communities similar to Texas Tech’s pioneering peer-based program.

CSAR is one of the first and largest programs of its type in the nation. Its students boast an average GPA above 3.0 and only 7 percent have suffered relapses. Using curriculum developed using federal funding, center officials have helped replicate the program on college campuses throughout the nation.

Officials from the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Department of Education will attend the conference along with representatives from schools interested in replicating Texas Tech’s program.
