Foot Society releases free informational brochure for arthritis sufferers

Arthritis of the foot and ankle affects almost half of all Americans over the age of 60. Now sufferers of arthritis may have some basic questions answered by a new brochure from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS).

"This brochure is designed to help those patients recently diagnosed with arthritis to understand their condition and know what they can do about it," explained Mark Scioli, M.D., Lubbock, Texas, Chairman of the AOFAS Arthritis Committee. "It is written in simple and direct terms to advise and assist a lay audience."

Penned by the AOFAS Committee on Arthritis, "Getting in Step with Arthritis" offers straightforward advice on the sources of arthritis and its treatment. Patients learn what tests their medical doctor will need to make a diagnosis and guide the patient toward self care.

The colorful brochure includes photographs and illustrations to help patients understand normal foot anatomy and how arthritis will affect their own feet and ankles. Also, the brochure will aid new patients in understanding the differences between the various health care professionals - such as rheumatologists, physiatrists, pedorthists and physical therapists - the new patient will meet as he or she undergoes therapy.

With the aid of graphics, "Getting in Step . . ." helps new patients understand how they can be an important part of their treatment and recovery.
