FORMER U.S. DEPT. OF COMMERCE UNDERSECRETARY TO FORECAST OUTLOOK FOR WOMEN IN CHEMISTRY

Chemist and former U.S. Department of Commerce Undersecretary Mary L. Good, Ph.D., will address a historic gathering of women chemists at the national meeting of the world's largest scientific society, the American Chemical Society, in Las Vegas Sept. 9. To honor 70 years of actions by the Society's Women Chemists Committee, Dr. Good, a past president of the Society, will speak on the historic and future challenges faced by women chemists as they enter the 21st century. Paul Anderson, Ph.D., the Society's President, and senior vice president for chemical and physical science at DuPont/Merck -- where he leads efforts to develop protease inhibitors and combination AIDS pharmaceutical therapies -- also will speak about women's contributions to chemistry and introduce a video presentation highlighting those accomplishments. Sandy Miller, Nevada's First Lady, will make welcoming remarks to luncheon attendees. Miller is chair of Nevada's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competiti! ve Research.
