FOSTER WHEELER PLEDGES STRONG SUPPORT FOR ENGINEERING

New York, July 3, 1997 -- Foster Wheeler Corp. has contributed $200,000 to a fund-raising campaign operated by ASME International (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), a philanthropic gesture which demonstrates the firm's commitment to the future of mechanical engineering throughout the world.

Foster Wheeler employs 2,000 people at its corporate headquarters in Clinton, N.J. Among other businesses, the company designs and builds refineries, electric power plants, and many other types of industrial facilities around the world.

The company's engineers and engineering capabilities have enabled Foster Wheeler to grow worldwide and achieve record earnings in 1996. Its contribution to the ASME Foundation is a form of "giving back."

"We believe that ASME's programs and activities play a critical part in furthering the mechanical engineering profession," said Richard J. Swift, chairman and chief executive officer of Foster Wheeler.

The Society will use funds received from Foster Wheeler and other companies to develop continuing education programs for practicing engineers, arrange the participation of engineers in the nation's public policy process and promote math and science learning among students, particularly at the middle-school level.

ASME's current fund-raising campaign is named World Class...By Design. To date, more than $2.8 million has been pledged by leading industrial firms and by individuals.

ASME, with 125,000 members around the world, is focused on technical, educational and research issues. It conducts one of the world's largest technical publishing operations, holds some 30 technical conferences and 200 professional development courses each year, and sets internationally recognized standards for industry and manufacturing.
