Newswise — Alexander P. Moya, M.D., director, Center for Weight Loss Body Contouring at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), performed his newly developed corset trunkplasty surgery for board-certified plastic surgeons at the University of Miami School of Medicine live via televised feed as he worked at an operating room at GMC in Danville on Nov 13.

“It was a tremendous opportunity to be able to share my experiences and knowledge with colleagues as far away as Miami,” said Dr. Moya. “By utilizing new technologies, we can communicate information and processes much farther than we could before, and hopefully we can continue to promote the quality practices that have worked for us at Geisinger to new venues.”

Corset trunkplasty surgery removes redundant skin, typically from patients who have previously undergone bariatric weight loss surgery, resulting in comprehensive contouring of the abdominal region and waistline. The procedure is performed entirely with Harmonic ™ (Ethicon Endo-Surgery) ultrasonic technology, which decreases surrounding tissue injury and blood loss, thereby resulting in improved recovery with less swelling and pain. Using this new body contouring approach, Dr. Moya can address many issues in one surgery that used to take multiple operative stages to resolve.

“Body contouring surgery has evolved rapidly in recent years, and many issues facing patients and surgeons concerning procedures are relatively new,” Dr. Moya said. “At Geisinger, we strive to be pioneers in the field, and we are proud to be able to share our knowledge with wider audiences.”

Dr. Moya currently has five other advanced body contouring courses scheduled at GMC for the next year, some or all of which may be televised to closed audiences. He also travels throughout the country to present and educate other plastic surgeons at national conferences.
