Newswise — SAN FRANCISCO, CA – January 12, 2016: Glaucoma Research Foundation President and CEO Thomas M. Brunner announced today that Charlot and Dennis Singleton, James Wise, MD, and Masashi Oka, will be honored at their 10th Annual Gala on January 28, 2016 at San Francisco’s historic Palace Hotel.
The Catalyst Award, Glaucoma Research Foundation’s highest honor, will be presented to longtime Atherton residents Charlot and Dennis Singleton in recognition of their outstanding leadership and philanthropic contributions to medicine and education. “Dennis has served on our Board of Directors for 18 years and he and Charlot give generously to support our mission, as well as many other organizations. We are thrilled to recognize both of them for their extraordinary philanthropy and advocacy,” Mr. Brunner said.
The Visionary Award will be presented to James B. Wise, MD, for his many contributions to the field of ophthalmology including the development of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT), a laser procedure for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma. Mr. Brunner noted, “Jim was the first to use ALT successfully more than 40 years ago and since then it has proven to be an important tool in the management of glaucoma. It is wonderful to honor Jim for his innovation that has helped countless patients preserve their vision as well as his continued and generous investment in our research programs.”
Masashi Oka, Executive Chairman Emeritus for MUFG Union Bank and Special Advisor to the President and CEO of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, will receive the President’s Award. Mr. Oka will be honored for his help in generating support for the Foundation and in recognition of his invovlement in many community organizations in the city of San Francisco and Northern California. “Union Bank and Mr. Oka have been great partners with Glaucoma Research Foundation for many years. We are so pleased to to have an opportunity to honor him for his involvement and support,” said Mr. Brunner.
Co-chaired by Nobuko Saito Cleary and Gary Cleary, PharmD, PhD, the Annual Gala includes a reception, silent auction and dinner to celebrate the donors, volunteers and scientists who have done so much to help in the fight against glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness.
The evening will conclude with a special performance from award-winning soprano and 2016 San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow, Julie Adams and pianist John Churchwell, PhD, Head of Music Staff at San Francisco Opera.
The Foundation’s Annual Gala launches Glaucoma 360, a unique series of three events that includes the 5th Annual New Horizons Forum, a full-day meeting dedicated to innovations in glaucoma therapy, and concludes with a Continuing Medical Education Symposium for ophthalmologists.
