Grapes And Alzheimer's

The class of compounds that helps cause the brilliant color of fruits and flowers may keep you in better health. Helen Kim, Ph.D., says polyphenols in plants show health-protective effects in a number of diseases. She is studying grapes, which are protective against heart disease and may prevent degenerative brain disease. "We already have demonstrated that some polyphenols in soy do suppress brain changes associated with Alzheimer's disease. Now we want to study the protection that may be given by polyphenols in grapes." Grapes with more deeply colored skin contain higher concentrations of these substances and may have greater protective effects. Kim is a researcher in the Purdue-UAB Center for the Study of Dietary Supplements in Botanicals.
