Newswise — Grinnell College geologist Larry Aspler is available to provide perspective on the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan.

Aspler currently teaches a course at Grinnell, “Natural Hazards and Disasters,” which examines the science of natural hazards, the social, political, and economic factors that shape public policy and contribute to the severity of natural disasters, and how risks from natural hazards can be mitigated.

Aspler also teaches courses in “Earth Systems Science,” “Environmental Challenges and Responses,” and “Glaciers, Landscapes and Human Interactions.” His research interests include using the geologic record to establish the frequency and severity of hazardous events.
