Newswise — Nine bands sponsored by Austin-area companies — groups of employees playing every genre from rock ’n’ roll to country to psych rock — will vie for celebrity judges’ votes, the audience’s favor and grand prizes on Tuesday, April 20, when Antone’s hosts the Showdown of Health Alliance for Austin Musicians’ 3rd Annual Corporate Battle of the Bands.

The Showdown starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at Antone’s, 213 W. Fifth St., with the nine bands — whose members have day jobs as lawyers, admen, event promoters, high-tech designers, and other business professionals and perform live music on the side — playing 15-minute sets before a packed house and a panel of celebrity judges. Awards will be announced and prizes given away after 11:30 p.m.

Judges for this year’s contest will be pop singer Johnny Goudie, booking agent Matt Hickey, music journalist Andy Langer and former member of The Go-Gos Kathy Valentine. ME Television’s Kevin Connor returns as emcee.

Judges will pick Best Cover Band, Best Original Band and Grand Prize Winner, but the audience will decide Fan Favorite by stuffing the most donations to HAAM into a specific band’s tip jar. Prizes include a day of recording with an engineer at Austin’s Bizmeaux Studios, a gig at Stubb’s Bar-BQ, passes to Austin City Limits Music Festival and Strait Music gift certificates; each winner earns a commemorative plaque.

Health Alliance for Austin Musicians provides access to affordable health care to Austin’s low-income, uninsured working musicians with a focus on prevention and wellness. Since HAAM’s 2005 start, almost 2,000 of the city’s battalion of hard-working musicians have joined and gained access to regular, cost-effective healthcare services. Medical, dental and mental health services are provided by Seton Family of Hospitals, St. David’s Foundation and The SIMS Foundation; services are expanding to include audiological and vision care. HAAM’s annual Corporate Battle of the Bands and HAAM Benefit Day (this year slated for Tuesday, September 21) have become signature events that unite music, business and the community behind a great cause: maintaining the health of the musicians who help make Austin such an enviable place to live and work.
