WINTER ARTHRITIS

Dr. Ifeoma Okoronkwo, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Rehabilitation Medicine,

Many people experience more arthritic pain in winter months, presumably due to cold, damp weather and less movement. Dr. Okoronkwo, a physiotrist (doctor specializing in rehabilitation), says many of her patients see her before winter begins in order to prevent winter arthritic pain. Dr. Okoronkwo employs one or both of two methods: acupuncture as a pain reliever and physical therapy to strengthen muscles surrounding the joints. "In an effort to unload the joint," says Dr. Okoronkwo, "we modify patients" walking to correct muscle imbalance." Dr. Okoronkwo does use other methods as well such as hyaluronic acid however, her main goals are to decrease the amount of pills arthritic patients have to take and to find other possible alternatives to surgery. Dr. Okoronkwo can also speak about winter fall prevention and treatment including Tai Chi and Qi Gong.
