Holiday Lighting Safety Tips

Electrical lights and decorations abound during the holiday season, but Katherine Terry, MPH, of UAB's Injury Control Research Center says misuse can lead to tragedy. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 3,110 people were treated in emergency rooms last year due to electrical decoration mishaps. "Don't connect too many light strings together -- no more than three of the small, push-in bulbs sets, while light strings with screw-in bulbs should have no more than 50 bulbs in any one set." Place your tree or greens at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources and do not block doorways or other exits.
