John Anthony Jane, Sr., M.D., Ph.D., Recognized as the 2000 Decade of the Brain Medalist

SAN FRANCISCO - The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) presented John Anthony Jane, Sr., MD, PhD, with the 2000 Decade of the Brain Medal at the AANS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, April 8-13, 2000. The Award was presented to Dr. Jane in recognition of his pioneering work in the area of brain injury research.

President George Bush signed a resolution on July 17, 1990, proclaiming the decade beginning January 1, 1990, as the "Decade of the Brain" in order to enhance public awareness of the benefits to be derived from brain research. To commemorate the event, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons helped establish an annual award designed to honor a distinguished neuroscientist for his or her contributions to brain research.

Dr. Jane earned both his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Chicago before completing his fellowships in neurophysiology and neuropathology at the Montreal Neurological Institute. He did his residency at the University of Chicago and the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute. Soon after, he received his doctorate in biopsychology from the University of Chicago. In 1967, he received his FRCS(C), as well as became Board certified. Since 1969, Dr. Jane has served as Chairman and David D. Weaver Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville).

An active member of the AANS since 1968, Dr. Jane has held a variety of leadership positions including serving as the current Editor of the Journal of Neurosurgery (1992-present) and the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine (1999-present), as well as the Chair of the Van Wagenen Fellowship Committee (1990). In addition to his involvement in the AANS, he has served as Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons (1989-1995), member of the Board of Directors of the National Head Injury Foundation (1992), Vice President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons (1988), and President of the Society of Neurological Surgeons (1993).

A renowned clinician and researcher, Dr. Jane has authored numerous books and articles for scientific journals on such topics as tumor, aneurysms, vascular malformations, head and spinal cord injury, and craniofacial surgery. He has an active spine practice, operating on more than 600 cases per year. In addition, he was one of the originators of the modern techniques used to treat craniofacial disorders.

Dr. Jane also has received numerous awards, including the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch Decade of the Brain Award (1999), the University of Virginia Dean's Recognition Award (1998), the Brain Injury Association's Lance Award (1995), and the University of Chicago's Distinguished Service Alumni Award (1988). He has been the Egyptian Society of Neurological Surgeons' Guest Lecturer (1999), Southern Neurosurgical Society's Eustace Semmes Lecturer (1998) Atkinson Morley Neuroscience Centre's Sir Wylie McKissock Neuroscience Lecturer (1997), the New York Neurosurgical Society's Charles Elsberg Lecturer (1994), Herberet Olivecrona Lecturer (1985) and recipient of the Grass Prize and Medal (1985).

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with nearly 5,500 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are Board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the spine, brain, nervous system and peripheral nerves.
