KENTUCKY PSYCHIATRIST TO LEAD AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION

Allan Tasman, M.D. of Louisville, KY, will take over the presidency of the 40,000 member American Psychiatric Association at the conclusion of the APAís 152nd Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 20, 1999. He succeeds Rodrigo Munoz, M.D., of San Diego, CA.

Dr. Tasman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He has served as President-elect of the Association since May 1998.

In addition to his strong interest in education of new psychiatrists, Dr. Tasman has a longstanding commitment to clinical care and research. His research has emphasized the role of brain mapping techniques in the study of thought processes, especially as they relate to the risk for development of alcoholism.

Dr. Tasman has chosen ìThe Doctor-Patient Relationshipî as his theme for the year, in which he will work ìto assure that the future practice of psychiatry integrates the best of our humanistic traditions with the latest scientific advances.î He will work to improve the quality of clinical practice, assure an adequate supply of psychiatrists for the future, expand APA relationships with consumer and advocacy groups, and adapt advances in information technology to the practice of psychiatry.

Dr. Tasman received his M.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and completed residency training at the University of Cincinnati in 1976. He has served as President of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, the Association for Academic Psychiatry, and the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry.

At APA, he has served as a member of components dealing with medical education and psychotherapy, served as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, and in 1996 was elected to a two-year term as Vice President.

As Dr. Tasman takes over the Presidency, Daniel Borenstein, M.D. will become President-elect. A resident of southern California, Dr. Borenstein is in full-time private practice. He served as APA Secretary from 1995-97, and is also Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Bio-behavioral Sciences at the University of California at Los Angeles.
