NYU Medical Center has opened a new Day Surgery Pavilion that is a model of patient-friendly, physician-friendly architecture and care. The 30,000 square foot pavilion, located on the 10th floor of Tisch Hospital, allows NYU Medical Center to continue its leadership in Day Surgery. Nineteen years ago, when NYU's unit first opened, it was the first ambulatory surgical unit on the East Coast.

The new Day Surgery Pavilion is one of the largest and most technologically advanced in the New York City area. With 10 operating rooms and 30 recovery stations, the Day Surgery Pavilion more than doubles the number of operating rooms currently available. It is predicted that, with the new facility, cases at NYU Medical Center will increase by at least 30 percent over the next three years.

"We have taken our 20 years of experience in day surgery and our knowledge of patients' and physicians' needs and created a physical environment that accommodates everyone," says Joseph G. McCarthy, M.D., Director of NYU's Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and head of the committee that brought the project to life.

"Our Day Surgery patients will benefit from having their surgery within a university medical center, with access to the same high standard of care that inpatients receive."

The new Day Surgery Pavilion has everything a patient needs in one location - waiting rooms (with a specially-designed separate play area for children), private consultation rooms, changing rooms and recovery areas - complete with river views. The Pavilion has its own internal elevator for physicians to give them easy access and a direct link to laboratories, supplies, additional anesthesia support and consultation with other physicians. "Our Day Surgery patients have the benefit of the best equipment possible, the expertise of all our physicians and our outstanding nursing and support care," says Nadine Drescher, R.N., M.P.A., Assistant Director of Operating Rooms and Department Head, Day Surgery. The new Day Surgery Pavilion allows for the best technology available in anesthesia delivery and pre-, post- and intraoperative communication and monitoring. With better-equipped rooms and more specialized technology, the surgical procedures will continue to grow in areas like general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and many other specialties.

The new Day Surgery Pavilion ensures that NYU's leadership in ambulatory care continues well into the next century. "NYU's new unit allows us to take advantage of the tremendous improvements in technology and instrumentation, and these changes make life easier for the patient who is undergoing surgery," says Margaret L. McClure, R.N., Ed.D., Senior Vice President for Hospital Operations and Nursing.
