Dr. Min, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY, submitted the winning project entitled "Application of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-T Cell Therapy in Aggressive Thyroid Cancer."

A 2016 Research Grant has been presented to Liora Katz, Ph.D., Instructor at the Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. Dr. Katz's project, "T3 and Glucose Signaling in Pancreatic ß-cells," will examine how glucose and thyroid hormone (T3) can work together to regulate the number of insulin-producing ß-cells in the pancreas.

The American Thyroid Association has awarded a Research Grant to David Sharlin, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Minnesota State University, Mankato, for his project entitled "Thyroid Hormone and Local Insulin-like Growth Factor Production in Developing Brain." Reduced levels of thyroid hormone (TH) during development put a child at risk of permanent neurological deficits.

The ATA has awarded a 2016 ThyCa Research Grant to Trevor Angell, MD, Instructor in the Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston MA, for his project entitled "Assessment of Circulation Immune Suppressor Cells for Predicating Treatment Response in Follicular Cell Derived Thyroid Carcinoma." The goal of this prospective study is to determine whether changes in the levels of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) in the peripheral blood of patients with thyroid cancer before and after therapy can serve as a predictive biomarker for response to treatment.

Reed Larsen, M.D., a member of the Thyroid Section, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Dr. Larsen will deliver the Lewis E. Braverman Lecture, entitled "Deiodinases, Cofactors & the Low T3 Syndrome," at the ATA's 86th Annual Meeting, September 21-25, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. The Lewis E. Braverman Lectureship Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated excellence and passion for mentoring fellows, students and junior faculty, has a long history of productive thyroid research, and is devoted to the ATA. The award is endowed by contributions to honor Dr. Lewis E. Braverman.
