February 5 — JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, has just released the third collection of its vastly popular Science Education video series in three additional languages—Chinese, Japanese and French. The collection, Model Organisms I: yeast, Drosophila and C. elegans, kicks off JoVE’s decision to make its entire Science Education video database available to those scientists, especially students, for whom English—the most commonly used language in scientific literature— is not their first language.

Ablative Solutions, Inc., a privately-held clinical stage company headquartered in Kalamazoo, MI, with offices in Menlo Park, CA, announced today that it has completed a Series B Preferred Stock financing, totaling approximately $9.5 million (including the conversion of the bridge financing completed in 2013), to fund its unique technology platform for renal denervation. The round was led by BioStar Ventures and Michigan Accelerator Fund, and included participation by the founders and multiple angel investors. "The Company has made tremendous progress in the two years since its inception with a unique approach to renal denervation, and has done so with great capital efficiency," affirmed Dale Grogan of Michigan Accelerator Fund, who was elected to the Company's Board of Directors upon closing of the financing.

/PRNewswire/ -- Altheus Therapeutics, Inc. announced the USPTO has allowed patent 8,629,127 B2 covering the oral pharmaceutical composition 5-ASA (5-aminosalicylic acid) and NAC (N-acetylcysteine). Combination therapy patents are uncommon and under-appreciated in the pharmaceutical industry because the Patent Office requires surprising, unexpected, or synergistic benefits from combining active ingredients into a single formulation. Altheus' success in procuring the strong and diverse patents for Zoenasa, including this most recent oral combination therapy patent, stems from rigorous studies demonstrating highly statistically significant synergy between Zoenasa's two components.

The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) announces that its educational initiative OpenAnesthesia (OA) has released version 2.0 of its self-study app for anesthesiology residents, CRNAs, SRNAs and physicians. A new set of 150 review questions has been added, for in-app purchase, for a total of 351 questions. The app is free to download on iTunes here.

Researchers and physicians at The Johns Hopkins University will collaborate with Belgian nanoelectronics research center imec to advance silicon applications in health care, beginning with development of a point-of-care device to enable a broad range of clinical tests to be performed outside the laboratory. The collaboration, announced today, will combine the Johns Hopkins clinical and research expertise with imec’s technical capabilities.

A mixture of native grasses that requires less maintenance to produce a lush lawn than a traditional turfgrass used in the South has been developed by a University of Texas at Austin ecologist and licensed to a sod producer. Known as HabitufTM, the native lawn mix was developed by the university’s Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The university has given a 10-year, nonexclusive license for Habiturf to Bladerunner Farms of Poteet, Texas.

A new Credit Suisse study reveals that U.S. calorie consumption rose from 3,200 per day in 1981 to 3,900 per day in 2012, driven in part by rising sugar consumption. Among the alternatives now being explored to counteract this trend, one of the most promising is stevia—the extract of a plant that is 200 times sweeter than sugar but that has no calories or carbohydrates.
