Two new European studies strongly support the effectiveness of mammography screening for women under 50.

Results of the clinical trials, one from the United Kingdom, the other from Edinburgh, Scotland, were published this week in The Lancet.

The UK trial found a 21 percent lower mortality rate among women in their 40s screened with mammography compared to those not screened. The Edinburgh trial had a 27 percent lower mortality rate for those screened.

A total of nearly 55,000 were studied in the Edinburgh trial and nearly 130,000 in the UK trial.

The studies appear in Volume 353, Number 9168, The Lancet, June 5.
