Roberts, MD, PHD, MPH, FACOEM, Principal Scientist at Exponent, Inc., Chicago, Ill., is the new President of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), the nation’s largest association representing occupational and environmental physicians. Dr. Roberts was installed May 6 during ACOEM’s 2015 American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC) in Baltimore, Md. He was among eight physicians who took office during ACOEM’s 100th annual membership meeting.

Dr. Roberts’ areas of expertise include clinical occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) and epidemiology of health complaints in communities and industrial settings. His corporate experience includes management of global health issues, clinical services, product liability issues, medical surveillance, fatality investigations, health benefit plan consultations, and work in the health, safety, and health benefits arena. His public health expertise involves treating infectious disease and evaluating environmental health issues.

In his inaugural address in Baltimore, Dr. Roberts urged “a new era of collaboration and cooperation with colleagues by working together to make the workplace safer and the worker healthier.” He expressed his vision for the College in the coming year is to “further strengthen our reputation as a leader in evidence-based science and policy making” and stated “ACOEM should place evidence based thinking at the very top of our decision-making process.” Dr. Roberts believes “our guidelines, policy statements and advocacy in Washington, D.C. should be firmly rooted in the best science – all these things together will raise our visibility and relevance in the health care system.”

Dr. Roberts received his medical degree from Oklahoma University College of Medicine and his MPH and PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Oklahoma School of Public Health, Oklahoma City. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, certified in occupational medicine.

Other officers installed for one-year terms were: President-Elect James A. Tacci, MD, JD, MPH, FACOEM; Vice President Charles M. Yarborough III, MD, MPH, FACOEM; and Secretary-Treasurer Jeffrey S. Harris, MD, MPH, MBA, FACOEM. Installed as Directors for 3-year terms (2015-2018) were: Richard F. Johnson, MD, MPH, FACOEM; Paul J. Papanek, MD, FACOEM; and Daniel G. Samo, MD, FACOEM. Muktar H. Aliyu, MD, DrPH, MPH, FACOEM, was installed as Director to fulfill the remaining year of Dr. Yarborough’s term, and Kathryn L. Mueller, MD, MPH, FACOEM, serves an additional year on the Board as Immediate Past President.

Also serving one-year terms on the Board are the Speaker and Speaker-elect of the ACOEM House of Delegates — Philip Adamo, MD, MPH, FACOEM, and Nelson S. Haas, MD, MPH, FACOEM, respectively. They were installed as House officers on May 3 at the 98th Session of the House along with newly elected HOD Recorder Douglas W. Martin, MD, FACOEM.
