ROCHESTER, MINN. ó Mayo Clinic Health O@sis (www.mayohealth.org) has won the 1998 international Webby Award for best Internet health site and has been named a finalist in the Global Information Infrastructure (GII) Awards.

The Webby Awards, dubbed ìthe Oscars of the Web,î honor the most popular, innovative and successful web sites in the world. Out of the thousands of sites reviewed for the awards, 95 were nominated. One site in each of 19 categories received awards. The awards ceremony was broadcast live over the Internet from San Francisco.

ìThe purpose of The Webby Awards is to put the spotlight on those Web sites that deserve peopleís attention,î says Tiffany Shlain, producer and creative director of the awards.

This is the fifth international awards competition that Mayo Clinic Health O@sis has won in the past two years. ìOur site is designed to help people live healthier, more enjoyable lives,î says Dr. Brooks Edwards, medical director, Mayo Clinic Health O@sis. ìWinning this award will help more people find out about our site so they can use it to find answers to their health and medical concerns.î

In the GII awards, Mayo Clinic Health O@sis was selected from over 800 entries as exemplifying the best practices and new models in the use of Internet and network technologies. Out of this group, one winner in each of 11 categories will emerge. Winners will be announced at the GII Awards Ceremony Monday, April 20 in Chicago.

The GII Awards, a non-partisan and independent initiative, recognizes champions from all industries and sectors of society who use the Internet and network technology to produce amazing results. The GII finals judging panels are comprised of a cross section of recognized experts in their respective fields and leading thinkers and practitioners of the digital revolution.

Mayo Clinic Health O@sis is devoted to providing the public with easy-to-understand, accurate and timely information. New information is posted each weekday. The site currently contains more than 4,500 pages on illness and disease, fitness and nutrition. The site currently receives 17,000 visits every day. Some of the most popular areas of the site are interactive quizzes, nutrition resource center and ìAsk Mayo.î
