The Family Place Pediatric Practice at UAB has a received a five-year, $200,000 grant from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau to establish a "medical home" for foster children with special needs.

"When a foster child is placed with a new family, the child may begin seeing a new primary care physician," says Alisa Hoffman, M.D., director of the Family Place. "Medical records may not follow the child, often times resulting in duplicate immunizations, missed routine screenings and lack of needed specialized care."

The program will provide a regular primary healthcare provider and a comprehensive medical record for foster children in the program regardless of changes in their foster care placement.
