Steven Y. Park, MD, specializes in diagnosing and treating obstructive sleep apnea, abnormal pauses in breathing or abnormally low breathing during sleep, and upper airway resistance syndrome. He takes an interdisciplinary approach, offering a variety of different nonsurgical treatment options, such as CPAP or oral appliances, as well as surgery when needed. He offers experienced surgical care, performing procedures involving the entire upper airway, including the nose, the soft palate and the tongue.

Michael Thorpy, MD, who is board-certified in sleep disorders medicine, has published extensively on narcolepsy, insomnia and other sleep disorders. His seven books include “The Encyclopedia of Sleep and Sleep Disorders.” Dr. Thorpy has served on the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) Board of Directors and founded and directed the NSF’s National Narcolepsy Registry. In addition, he is past Chairman of the Sleep Section of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Thorpy was born in New Zealand and earned his medical degree from the University of Otago in 1973.

Shelby Harris, Psy.D., C.BSM, is board certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. A graduate of Brown University, Dr. Harris received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. Dr. Harris completed her predoctoral internship at Montefiore Medical Center where she trained in the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center, and has received advanced postdoctoral training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depressive disorders.

As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Harris specializes in behavioral sleep medicine and CBT for anxiety and depression. She has published and presented research on the neuropsychological effects of insomnia in older adults as well as behavioral treatments for insomnia, parasomnias, narcolepsy and excessive daytime sleepiness.

David William Appel, MD, has been the Director of the Pulmonary Sleep Lab since 1999 where he has participated in numerous research studies, including Hepcidin levels among elderly people with severe obstructive sleep apnea, application of snoring severity to predict effective continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and the relationship between gender and sleep apnea and the prevalence of sleep disorders in the Hispanic community. He received his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency at Jacobi Hospital.

Neomi Shah, MD, conducts research focused on understanding the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and coronary artery disease. During her post-doctoral fellowship, she found OSA to be an independent risk factor for incident coronary artery disease related events. Currently, she is actively involved in leading a study involving patients with an acute myocardial infarction. Dr. Shah received her medical degree at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and completed a fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Sleep Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine.

Ranaan Arens, MD, established the Sleep Disorders Center at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. It is the first center in the New York metropolitan area dedicated exclusively to providing careful evaluation, monitoring and treatment of children with sleep issues.
