New York, NY, Feb. 13, 2001 - Robert M. Glickman, MD, Dean of the New York University School of Medicine, and Martin J. Blaser, MD, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the School, announced that R. Nathan Link, MD, has been appointed to the position of Chief of Medical Service at Bellevue Hospital, effective today.

Dr. Link, a renowned specialist in primary care, will be responsible in his new role for the administrative, clinical, educational and research activities on the Medical Service at Bellevue and will work closely with both Dr. Blaser and Dr. Eric Manheimer, Medical Director at Bellevue Hospital Center.

Dr. Link's key mission will be to strengthen the services provided to Bellevue by the NYU School's Department of Medicine and to broaden training and research opportunities there. To those ends, Dr. Link will develop and expand the Medical Service by establishing specialty Sections and appointing Section Chiefs in each medical subspecialty, such as Cardiology, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology.

Prior to accepting this appointment, Dr. Link has had a long relationship with both the NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital. He completed his internal medicine residency in the joint NYU-Bellevue program in 1986, after graduating from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1983. He then joined Bellevue's Primary Care Clinic as a clinician-educator while obtaining a Masters in Public Health degree in Health Policy and Management at Columbia University.

Except for a one-year leave of absence to work on a public health project in Nairobi, Kenya in 1990, Dr. Link has remained at Bellevue in roles of ever-increasing responsibility, including Chief of the Primary Care Clinic, Director of the Medical Clinics and most recently Deputy Director and then Acting Director of the Ambulatory Care Department.

"Dr. Link's reputation as an outstanding clinician and teacher will build and strengthen the renowned primary and specialty services at Bellevue, while enhancing the training received by NYU's residents there," said Dr. Blaser. "His long experience at Bellevue, his character and his vision ensure that this will be a successful endeavor," he added.

Dr. Link will retain his post as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Primary Care in the Department of Medicine at NYU and will be a member of the Executive Committee of the NYU Department of Medicine. As the NYU School of Medicine faculty staffs most of the services at Bellevue Hospital, this type of dual role is customary.

Dean Glickman explained that "we are particularly enthusiastic about Nate's appointment, which is a key leadership position in the collaboration between the NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue's parent, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation."
