Newswise — The National Science Foundation, through its Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program (S-STEM), has awarded the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at FAU's John D. McArthur Campus in Jupter, Florida with a $500,000 grant for a project entitled "Wilkes Honors College Science Scholarship."

"Our funded proposal will allow us to provide $1,000 to $10,000 in Wilkes Honors College Science Scholarships to high achieving students with financial need who are interested in studying biology or chemistry," said Dr. Paul Kirchman, principal investigator on the grant, chair of sciences and mathematics, and associate professor of biology at the Wilkes Honors College.

The award is effective from October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2011. Scholarships will be awarded beginning in the fall of 2007 and will support approximately 15 students per year. In addition to the scholarships, students will be eligible to apply for research opportunities with Wilkes Honors College faculty during the summer. Summer research students will receive stipends to cover the cost of living expenses.

"This grant will provide an extraordinary opportunity to high achieving students who want to pursue an education in the natural sciences," said Dr. Jeffrey L. Buller, dean of FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. "As FAU's most academically selective college, we are attracting students with strong backgrounds in math and science who are working with faculty members who are internationally recognized in their fields."

The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College was established in the fall of 1999 and is the first public college to be built from the ground up in the United States. With one faculty member for every 12 students, classes are small and learning is pursued in formal and informal settings. Students have the opportunity to work on research projects one-on-one with college faculty, and these collaborations have resulted in numerous publications in scholarly journals. The Honors College is located on FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus in the heart of Abacoa, a 2,055-acre, master planned, mixed-use community. In addition, the campus is the site of Scripps-Florida, one of the world's premier biomedical research institutes.
