Hormone Replacement Therapy and Myocardial Infarctions in Postmenopausal Women

There is no statistically significant increase or decrease in the odds ratio for myocardial infarction in postmenopausal women who currently use estrogen and estrogen-progestogen, a new study shows. (Article, p. 501.) Results of a three year retrospective case-control study neither confirm nor refute the hypothesis that hormone replacement therapy prevents myocardial infarction in postmenopausal women.

* * * Social Class Effects Functional Recovery after Myocardial Infarction

Social class has a substantial influence on recovery from myocardial infarction and may explain differences in clinical outcomes, a study found. A randomized, double-blind trial of 2,145 males found men of high social class were substantially more likely than men of low or middle social class to have improved functional status one year after myocardial infarction. (Article, p. 518.)

* * * Update in Geriatrics

A paper reviews recent major advances in geriatric medicine and focuses on strategies and observations clinicians can put into practice. (Update, p. 557.)

* * * A Call to Register Unreported Clinical Trials

The editors of nearly 100 international medical journals have asked all investigators to register results from randomized, controlled trials that have not been published. (Editorial, p. 567.)
