The Olympiad originated in 1968 with a competition between Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary. Western Europe first participated in 1974, and the U.S. joined in 1984. The Russian team placed first with four gold medals at last year's Olympiad held in Moscow.

The four-member U.S. team was chosen from a group of 20 finalists who studied at a two- week chemistry training camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. These 20 were chosen from an original group of about 10,000 students nationwide.
