Newswise — In a speech today, President Obama made a series of energy policy announcements, including expanded offshore oil drilling and new fuel economy standards for automobiles. The president also reiterated his call for Congress to deliver a comprehensive climate and energy bill this year.

Jeremy Symons, senior vice president of the National Wildlife Federation said:

“We cannot drill our way to energy independence. The bottom line is there simply is not enough oil available off of our coasts to satisfy America's fossil fuel addiction. As the president said himself today, ‘drilling alone can’t come close to meeting our long-term energy needs.’ Just as important, the risks to our coasts and wildlife do not outweigh the benefits.

“Energy efficiency and clean energy are the right answers to ending America’s oil addiction while reducing the growing effects of climate change. America has limited oil reserves but unlimited capacity to innovate and pursue cleaner alternatives.

“We applaud President Obama’s announcement that he is finalizing the landmark fuel economy measures and tailpipe pollution standards. The plan will save consumers billions, cut our oil dependence and greatly reduce global warming pollution.

“The president is also absolutely correct in calling on Congress to pass a clean energy plan for America this year that delivers less pollution, more jobs and more security.”
