Newswise — Accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, David M. Scher, MD, has joined the Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City.

In his new position, Dr. Scher will focus on treating the entire scope of orthopaedic disorders that can affect children. This broad range includes fractures and sports injuries as well as complex congenital and developmental anomalies such as clubfoot and cerebral palsy. He will also have a significant influence on both the clinical and academic pursuits of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Department at HSS.

In welcoming Dr. Scher to HSS, Dr. Roger F. Widmann, Chief of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Service at HSS said, "We are delighted to have Dr. Scher join our staff. His orthopaedic expertise and innovative techniques will have a great impact on patient care."

Raised in South Orange, N J, Dr. Scher graduated with honors from Brown University in 1989. In 1993, Dr. Scher graduated the Duke University School of Medicine, where he was awarded a prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholarship. Shortly thereafter, he began his orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute in New York, NY, and in 2000, Dr. Scher completed his Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at the Children's Hospital in San Diego, CA. He then returned to New York where he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine-Hospital for Joint Diseases Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

A Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Scher has received numerous awards for research and has been both a collaborator and sole author of numerous publications and presentations.
