Newswise — SEATTLE – Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and UW Medicine are pleased to announce that UW Physician Dr. William P. Hammond will join the SCCA oncology program based on UW Medicine’s Northwest Hospital & Medical Center campus. A nationally recognized oncologist with more than 35 years of experience, Dr. Hammond joins UW as a clinical professor of hematology and medical oncology. He will be responsible for developing the SCCA practice of general hematology and medical oncology as well as establishing a clinical training program for fellow and residents at Northwest Hospital.
“We are very excited to have Dr. Hammond join our team to help further advance our practices at Northwest Hospital and to mentor young physicians within the medical and radiation oncology program,” said Fred Appelbaum, executive director of SCCA. “Dr. Hammond has extraordinary experience treating patients and will be a valuable asset to our team at Northwest Hospital.”
Dr. Hammond is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist who specializes in hematology, medical oncology and internal medicine. Dr. Hammond was previously a hematologist and medical oncologist at Minor & James Medical, PLLC, where he also served as President. During his tenure at Minor & James, Dr. Hammond was a regular participant in the educational and research programs of the Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI), where he became an Associate Investigator. He completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the University of Washington Medical Center and earned his medical degree (MD) from Tufts University.
Dr. Hammond also has extensive experience mentoring young physicians. He previously worked at the University of Washington in the Division of Hematology from 1978 until 1997, rising to the rank of associate professor. During his earlier faculty tenure, Dr. Hammond served as chair of the hematology course for second year medical students and was one of the early developers of the Problem-Based Learning curriculum for second year students at the School of Medicine. He later served as director of Medical Education at Providence Seattle Medical Center where he was responsible for student teaching programs, the organization of CME programs and the supervision of residents in the Department of Medicine and fellows in the Division of Hematology.
