Newswise — SEATTLE – Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) is proud to announce the recent hiring of two expert hematologists. Dr. David A. Garcia joins SCCA as a specialist in treating thrombosis and blood disorders and will also serve as professor of hematology in the Department of Medicine /Hematology and associate medical director for Antithrombotic Therapy at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Stephen Douglas Smith joins SCCA as a medical oncologist with specific expertise in treating patients with lymphoma and is also an associate professor in the University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology. Dr. Smith will also serve as an attending physician at the University of Washington Medical Center.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have both Dr. Garcia and Dr. Smith join our program,” stated Fred Appelbaum, executive director of SCCA. “Both physicians have a successful history treating patients with hematologic disorders and will be excellent resources for our patients.”
Dr. Garcia is a board-certified internist who specializes in treating clotting and blood disorders. His research focuses on thrombotic disorders and the anticoagulant medications used to treat or prevent blood clots.
Dr. Garcia was previously professor of Medicine and director of Anticoagulation Services, University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He has received fellowship training in Hematology at the University of Washington, completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital and earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
Dr. Smith is a board-certified hematologist, oncologist and internist who specializes in treating lymphoma. He previously served as an attending physician in Hematologic Malignancies inpatient services at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital and was also an assistant professor at Oregon Health and Science University Department of Hematology and Oncology, Knight Cancer Institute. Dr. Smith completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Southern California Medical Center and earned his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Dr. Smith’s areas of research involve the testing of novel therapeutic agents for lymphoma, design of clinical trials and identification of prognostic factors in lymphoma.
