Stefanie Barthmare, a psychotherapist with the Methodist Weight Management Center in Houston, says people trying to slim down need encouragement, motivation and want results. Social networking sites are perfect places for people to join weight loss groups to share goals, swap recipes, tell stories and offer support to people in the same situation. She adds it can be encouraging and push you harder when you see friends losing weight.

A recent survey by Nielsen Online found that one in 11 minutes spent online around the world is devoted to social networking and blogging sites.
