Newswise — Dr William Proctor is Director of The World Star Wars Project, a five-year long study which aims to examine the franchise from a multitude of perspectives including industry analysis and audience research.

As Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon, the project seeks to understand the reasons that lie behind the franchise success - in many ways, just as researchers may look at indigenous cultures in anthropology, artefacts of popular culture also need to be examined to excavate what pleasures audiences gain from their continuing involvement in a large-scale phenomenon. The first phase of the project has just closed which was an online questionnaire which has received over 1800 responses in less than three weeks. This phase set out to learn the way in which audiences were preparing for the release of the new film, The Force Awakens, before the film was actually released -- their hopes and fears. We have learned that many people actually sought out spoilers to ensure that the film would meet their expectations and desires.

ISDN lines are available at Bournemouth University and Dr Proctor is available this week.
