When young quarterbacks and wide receivers are running for the end zone, make sure it's not their teeth that are getting tackled.

Maureen Pezzementi, D.M.D., says as football season gears up, mouth guards are as important as helmets and shoulder pads. Mouth guards protect teeth against elbows and toes and other blows. She says they are particularly important for adolescents, since they are losing the last of their baby molars and getting their final set of permanent teeth. At this age, roots are still weak and teeth can be easily popped out.

Mouth guards cost from $5 to $25, and are available at sporting goods stores or your local dentist's office.
