Newswise — July is Ultraviolet light (UV) Safety Awareness Month. Lisa Park, MD, clinical assistant professor in the department of ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center is urging Americans this summer to protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. " UV rays can damage sensitive tissues of the eye causing cataracts to form and macular degeneration. Sunglasses can help prevent your risk of these diseases along with the prevention of wrinkles and possible skin cancer. When choosing a pair of sunglasses make sure they are large, close to the face and block both harmful UV-A and UV-B light," says Park. The expert also stresses the importance of protecting the eyes of our children by having them wear sunglasses too. Remember harmful UV radiation can be reflected off sand, water and even pavement damaging the eyes.

Tips for Summer Eye Protection:

Wear sunglasses with 97% to 100% UV-A and UV-B protection

Avoid purchasing sunglasses without UV labeling

More expensive and darker sunglasses are not always better

Large, wrap-around style sunglasses are best

Don't rely on UV contact lenses, also wear sunglasses

Protect yourself on hazy and cloudy days too

Wear a hat

Wear sunglasses all year round
