Mabel Berezin, a Cornell University sociologist whose current work focuses on contemporary sites of social, political and cultural change, says Trump’s visceral campaign may take him all the way to the nomination.

Berezin says:

“Donald Trump is running on the visceral - meaning he has displayed an almost preternatural ability to tap the right emotion at the right moment for a large group of people who feel themselves dis-enfranchised in various ways. From terrorism to jobs to immigration, he plays to his audience - a reason why his numbers have kept rising since the fall and why reasoned arguments against him fall on deaf ears.

“The Iowa caucus will be Trump’s first real test. If he wins it, and then also wins New Hampshire, it would be difficult to imagine him not going on to the nomination. So beware, Trump might be with us for a long time.

“On the other hand, the odds will be against Trump should he lose these two key states. With the exception of Bill Clinton, in 1992, no candidate has lost Iowa and New Hampshire and gone onto the nomination.”
