An expert in intimate partner violence and risk factors for intimate partner homicide and safety planning, Laughon has focused her practice and research on issues of intimate partner violence and its impact on women and children. At U.Va., she collaborates with colleagues Richard Steeves and Barbara Parker in a study of intimate partner homicide and its impact on children. In 2008, Laughon received a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Award to support her research to test a computerized safety planning aid for battered women seeking protective orders for intimate partner violence.

She is also a forensic nurse examiner and conducts evidence collection and provides care to victims of sexual assault.

Laughon currently is principal investigator on a National Institute of Mental Health-funded study to test an intervention for guardians of children orphaned by intimate partner homicide. She serves on the board of the Nursing Network on Violence Against Women, International.

Laughon received a B.S.N. and M.S.N. from the U.Va. School of Nursing. She received her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University.
