MAJOR SAN DIEGO RESEARCH ENTERPRISES SET UP SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ALLIANCE

An alliance of major research and technology enterprises based in San Diego, and administered by the University of California, San Diego, has been created to foster and expand the region's global leadership in science and technology.

Edward Frieman, former director of UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, will chair the new group called "Science San Diego." The group will be guided by a distinguished Board of Advisors representing the leadership of San Diego's public and private science and technology organizations.

"The industrial, research, and education communities in the San Diego region have an opportunity to compete more effectively and to make our voices louder through collaboration," said Robert C. Dynes, chancellor of UCSD.

"This alliance will allow us to explore our mutual interests and develop an agenda for our regional science and technology policy dialogue."

Dynes announced the formation of the alliance today during a regional summit on the future of research and development, co-sponsored by UCSD, the Washington D.C.-based Council on Competitiveness and the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.

As envisioned, the new organization will:

*identify and assess regional/global trends and issues affecting San Diego research institutions;

*identify common interests within the San Diego science and technology communities in policy, funding and leadership issues, and actively influence key policy, funding and leadership decisions critical to San Diego research institutions;

*increase public understanding and support for the regional science and technology enterprise;

*serve as a convener of key meetings and events to focus local attention on regional innovation issues and to foster dialogue among local, national, and international leaders.

Aside from Frieman and Dynes, members of the alliance's board include: J. R. Beyster, chairman and executive officer, Science Applications International Corp.; Linden S. Blue, vice chairman, General Atomics; Jerry Caulder, chairman and chief executive officer, Mycogen Corp.; Irwin M. Jacobs, chairman and chief executive officer, QUALCOMM, Inc.; Richard A. Lerner, president, The Scripps Research Institute; Thomas D. Pollard, president, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies; Stephen D. Rockwood, senior vice president and manager, advanced technology and analysis sector, Science Applications International Corp.; Duane J. Roth, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp.; Erkki Ruoslahti, president and chief executive officer, The Burnham Institute; Rear Admiral George Wagner, commander, Space and Naval Warfare Systems; Stephen Weber, president, San Diego State University.
