UCSD TO HOLD PANEL ON U.S.-MEXICAN BORDER POLICY OCT. 17

A workshop on U.S.-Mexican border policy, featuring some of the region's top experts on drug control and immigration control, will be held Oct. 17 from 1:30 -5:30 p.m. at the University of California, San Diego.

Perspectives on U.S.-Mexican Border Policy, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Deutz Conference Room of the Institute of the Americas Complex at UCSD. The workshop, which is being sponsored by the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS), will include top experts from Mexico and the U.S. on the control of illicit drug trafficking and illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexican border.

The panel of drug control experts includes: Peter Andreas, Cornell University and Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at UCSD; Alan Bersin, U.S. Attorney, Southern District of California; Jorge Chabat, Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economicas, Mexico; Guadalupe Gonzalez, UCSD; and Peter Smith, Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, UCSD, who will provide commentary.

The immigration control experts participating in the workshop are: Robert Bach, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Washington, D.C.; Tim Dunn, University of Texas, Austin; Luis Herrera-Lasso, Consul General de Mexico, San Diego; Joe Nevins, UCLA; and Wayne Cornelius, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, who will provide commentary.

A reception will be held immediately following the workshop for panelists and guests.
