Newswise — URS Corporation, a global engineering and construction firm serving both private and public sector organizations, has been awarded the Corporate Health Achievement Award (CHAA) Exemplary Practice Citation by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). URS Corporation received the citation for its outstanding efforts in promoting employee health, wellness, and safety.

The Exemplary Practice Citation recognizes projects or initiatives for innovations targeted at specific health and safety issues. URS Corporation was recognized for its Absence and Disability Management Program, aimed at employees of the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF) in Tooele County, Utah. The facility, the first in the nation and under contract with the U.S. Army, disposes of aging, deteriorating chemical weapons and secondary wastes in a safe, secure, and environmentally compliant manner to ensure worker and public protection.

The URS program Absence and Disability Management Program was created to increase organizational involvement in the management of employee injury and illness. The program seeks to more comprehensively involve managers, supervisors, human resources, and safety and health professionals in a Case Management Group (CMG) that coordinates care for injured or ill workers.

“The URS Corporation’s CMG program has yielded a measurable improvement in employee safety and well-being, while enhancing productivity and containing costs,” said ACOEM President Pamela A. Hymel, MD. “It’s a formula for success that provides inspiration and a practical roadmap for others to follow.”

“With passage of health reform legislation, it’s more important than ever for employers to take steps to ensure their workers remain healthy and productive,” she said. “ACOEM is taking a leadership role – with programs such as the Exemplary Practice Citation – to pass on important ideas and innovations to the overall employer community and encourage their implementation.”

The CHAA, co-sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, recognizes quality occupational and environmental health programs. The Exemplary Practice Citation was established in 2009 as way of acknowledging targeted programs in the workplace that are aimed at improving the health and safety of workers. Recipients are judged on well-defined programs with measurable results that establish best practices which employers can emulate.
