Raw poultry is one of the main causes of Salmonella poisoning, which affects thousands of people in the U.S. every year. A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign shows that few products with high levels of very virulent Salmonella strains are responsible for most of the illnesses from raw chicken parts.

Sneaking by cancer’s defenses, by disguising tumor-fighting antibodies inside the molecules cancer uses to nourish tumor growth, is the basis of a novel therapy from Yale Cancer Center researchers at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM). As explained in a paper published July 15 in ACS Central Science, the Trojan-horse therapy proved effective against several cancer tumor types in the laboratory, including brain tumors that can be difficult to reach with therapy due to the protective blood-brain barrier.

In order for immune cells to effectively kill cancer cells, a triad of three cells are necessary — a dendritic cell, a cytotoxic “killer” T cell, and a helper T cell, researchers at MSK and Baylor College of Medicine have found. The discovery could alter the way doctors administer immunotherapies.

The fusion of two nuclei is a complex process influenced by the relative energy and angular momentum of the nuclei and how their structures evolve as they collide. In this study, the researchers performed the most comprehensive computation to date of fusion reaction processes. The results indicate differences between the simulation results and experimental measurements which point to the presence of presently unaccounted for phenomena in fusion models.

Irvine, Calif., July 15, 2024 — As the planet continues to warm due to human-driven climate change, accurate computer climate models will be key in helping illuminate exactly how the climate will continue to be altered in the years ahead. In a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, a team led by researchers from the UC Irvine Department of Earth System Science and the University of Michigan Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering reveal how a climate model commonly used by geoscientists currently overestimates a key physical property of Earth’s climate system called albedo, which is the degree to which ice reflects planet-warming sunlight into space.
