Newswise — After launching a collaborative effort with Kent State University's Center for Materials Informatics (CMI) last year, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is solidifying its commitment to advancing research by forming a partnership with the Center.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by CMI and TMS, which will establish TMS as one of CMI's professional society partners and enhance cooperative activities.

"This relationship with the Center for Materials Informatics at Kent State provides an excellent opportunity to continue to serve our members in this important emerging area in which TMS has been a recognized leader," said Warren H. Hunt, executive director of TMS.

Through projects such as the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Materials Digital Library Pathway (MatDL), CMI contributes to the emerging field of materials informatics, which facilitates the high-speed acquisition, analysis and dissemination of information. The goal is to support materials behavior comprehension, expedite the development of materials with unique properties and prepare the next generation of materials scientists.

"Cooperative efforts between CMI and TMS can maximize impact by directing their complementary expertise towards high priority areas in their community, such as computational materials," said Laura Bartolo, CMI director and a professor in College of Arts & Sciences at Kent State.

TMS will bring several contributions to its professional partnership with CMI:

"¢ A venue for CMI review meetings in connection with the TMS Annual Meeting or at other meetings

"¢ Promotion of CMI workshops or training sessions at the TMS Annual Meeting or at other stand-alone meetings

"¢ Dissemination of information and demonstration of software tools through TMS webcasts

"¢ Publication opportunities through TMS publications, including JOM and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions

"¢ Promotion and access to educational software tools through the TMS Web portal

"In the future, TMS and CMI will continue to work together to develop and deploy cyber-enabled services of extraordinary utility for materials, research, learning and industry," Bartolo said.
